MEET DEREK

Derek Dobies is a bold leader focused on building opportunity for working people across Jackson. As a former mayor and current school board member, he brings his hard work ethic and decades of policy experience towards rebuilding our local schools, community, and economy.

Valuing Education

I grew up the son of two public school teachers who instilled in me the value of a quality public education. It’s what drove me to work hard at school and graduate with a degree in Political Theory & Constitutional Democracy from Michigan State University.

As mayor of the City of Jackson, I understood that the success of our community is tied to the success of our school system, and that for Jackson to thrive, we must ensure our students, parents and teachers are supported by a strong, vibrant school system.

Now the father of a 2nd grader in Jackson Public Schools, I serve as a Trustee on the Jackson Public Schools Board of Education to make sure that students across greater Jackson have access to the same educational opportunities I want for my daughter.

Freedom.

Opportunity. Democracy.

I firmly believe that freedom is not merely the absence of restraint, but the presence of opportunity and equality for all. True freedom means having access to quality education, affordable healthcare, and economic opportunity regardless of one's background or circumstances. It means the freedom to live without fear of discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion. We recognize freedom and build opportunity when we fight for policies that promote fair wages, protect reproductive rights, and protect voting rights for all Americans. We strengthen that freedom when we practice democracy in the workplace and in our communities.

Together, we can building an inclusive and equitable democracy where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, pursue their dreams, and fully enjoy the freedoms that define our nation.

September 2022

“Derek has the support of an overwhelming majority of the current Board Members because — just like he was for our city — we know that he will be a champion for our school system and will work to attract and retain the students of tomorrow. With Derek Dobies, we know Jackson Public Schools will have an effective leader who can work with parents, listen to our teachers, and always put the interest of our students first.”

President Angela Mitchell / JPS Board of Education

OCTOBER 2022

“We endorsed Derek Dobies for JPS School Board because we have the confidence that he will listen to the needs of educators in supporting an environment most conducive to student success. The importance of quality public education for all students continues to be under-appreciated in multiple ways, and we believe that Derek's experience in the Jackson community will be invaluable to ensuring that Jackson students, teachers, and parents have the absolute best schools and educational opportunities possible.”

President Geoff Lowes / Jackson Education Association
